ROCK on Chris.

Comedian and presenter Chris Rock should take a bow after turning what could have been a PR disaster for the Oscars into one of the most entertaining nights in its history.

There's a touch of delicious irony about him bringing the house down with a series of near to the knuckle jokes in a year when the lack of racial diversity of the Academy Awards had been making all the headlines.

Ignoring calls to boycott the ceremony, he hosted the awards for the second time - and spouted a series of hysterical race-based gags from the start.

“If they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job” he got under way with before launching into gags on such bizarrely diverse issues as Rihanna's pants and historical lynching, much to the delight of an amused audience.

Chris Rock succeeded where it would have been so easy to fail. He managed to make sense - and fun - of the controversy that threatened to ruin Tinseltown's few hours of self congratulation for movie makers.

Wake up call noted and acted upon, it was time to enjoy the dresses, the tears, the glitz and the glamour.

Give that man a standing ovation and move onto the next outrage. Now it's all about Sam Smith's lack of knowledge or research into his fellow gay Oscar winners.

There's nothing like a Hollywood drama, especially in real life.
