OOH Matron! Everyone's first thought following the news this week that the Carry On franchise is set to make a big screen comeback.

The retro comedies might lead to howls of laughter in our house every Christmas. Not from me I might add. But surely the days of this pervy old relic are in the past?

Or so I thought.

Of course the politically correct brigade are outraged at the prospect of the return of the innuendo laden franchise which they have branded outdated and sexist.

I can see their point. Things have changed a lot since the 60s when the double entendres, bum pinching and filthy puns of Camping, Doctor and Up The Khyber were considered perfectly acceptable.

But, actually, for all it's political incorrectness, chauvinism and slap and tickle, Carry On produced strong women. Barbara Windsor, Joan Sims and Hattie Jacques went on to build impressive careers on the back of the franchise, Windsor involved in one of British soap's biggest storylines just this week as Peggy Mitchell bows out of Eastenders.

The new films, Carry On Doctors, due for release in 2017 and Carry On Campus come from the team behind Two Pints of Lager and A Packet of Crisps, which launched the career of the Olivier Award winning Sheridan Smith.

So should Carry On really carry on?

Possibly not on its previous form. But things evolve and there's still a market for something so cheeky, risque and downright naughty.

We know from the success of The Inbetweeners that dirty gags and close to the mark toilet humour are still so much a part of the British psyche.

Let's hope it goes all the way!
