NOT only is he our homegrown hero, a global superstar and really lovely to boot. He's also terribly reliable it seems.

Craig David has always been completely charming and utterly professional every time I've encountered him in my more years than I'd like to remember in this job.

I first met the Southampton RnB sensation a decade ago during a tiny gig in the concourse of St Mary's Stadium. Just 100 lucky competition winners were treated to tickets for the intimate date with Kano and I grabbed a chat about his Saints support, the Dell days and some of his old haunts around the city.

Despite his globetrotting antics, Craig never forgot his roots and always responded to a call or Tweet, even when it was to ask him what he made of Keith Lemon sending him up during his skit show Bo Selecta.

And the emotion was genuine during my last chat with the 7 Days hitmaker, before he took to the stage to at his homecoming date at Common People earlier this summer.

So I was surprised to read he didn't turn up to his latest festival appearance.

He failed to make it for his set at Boardmasters Festival in Cornwall after his flight from London to Newquay was cancelled.

Leaping into emergency mode, he did try to get there via private jet and helicopter, to no avail, according to an Instagram video he posted to say sorry to his fans.

He could have done no more. Frankly, I was more surprised that he hadn't missed a single live appearance in the last 15 years and this was the first time he'd had to let his fans down since 2001.

What an impressive track record from a local legend.
