GOOD sense will at last prevail in the festive charts this year.

The Military Wives are on course to be this year's Christmas number one and become the fastest-selling single for six years.

And it’s about time too.

OK, so Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the die-hard classics which are as much a part of the season as Santa and stockings, mince pies and mistletoe.

It just wouldn’t feel right pushing your trolley around an inevitably overcrowded supermarket, devoid of food, to anything but Fairytale of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl, Wham’s Last Christmas or even Mariah Carey’s only decent hit All I Want For Christmas Is You.

Two of those weren’t even Christmas number ones and, let’s be honest, some of the chart-toppers have been appalling.

Who can forget Mr Blobby and Bob the Builder from the 90s or even Benny Hill’s 70s favourite Ernie, The Fastest Milkman in the West?

And, of course, the wannabes from X Factor have dominated the charts in recent years.

So, as Christmas is all about loved ones, unashamed sentimentality and charity, I’m delighted that the beautiful Wherever You Are, which so reflects the public mood and supports military charities, will get 2011’s crown.

A love letter from the frontline, do pop one in the stocking of those you love this Christmas.

After a long wait, a festive number one the nation can be proud of.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas.
