Where did all the funny go?

RICKY Gervais has ruled himself out of hosting the Golden Globes again next year.

A pre-emptive strike after falling flat at the event this week, I would have thought.

One of his better jokes went something like this. “The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and more easily bought – allegedly.”

It was hardly the sort of quip to endear himself to organisers.

I preferred it last year when he was insulting Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp and their one dimensional movie The Tourist as they sat only a few feet away not knowing where to look.

The reaction of Hollywood A listers to his near the knuckle remarks were about the only time he’s made me laugh out loud in years. And I’ve seen him live recently.

And I suspect bosses secretly adored the headline news he created with his acerbic gags directed at the great and good of Tinseltown.

This time around, hosting for a third time in a row, there was no irony, no razor-sharp wit, no British sense of humour. It was just dull – the nearest he came to his previous glories a fairly silly quip about Jodie Foster and The Beaver.

I can’t bear the back slapping that goes on at these ceremonies and adored the chance to see the glitterati squirm.

I’d like more insults again next year please!

Gervais has only ever been funny once and that was his stand up 'Animals', which was hilarious, the rest of the time he is a jumped up little man with what appears to be a big chip on his shoulder and the sense that we all should adore him.

No Ricky! get some new material and stop regurgitation past insults to knock down those in the spotlight.

He is supposedly the best the british can offer in way of comedy... He gives the brits a bad reputation

Send them Michael Macintyre. Naturally funny and not at other people's expense. Gervaise thinks that being sarcastic is funny. It is not. It is cheap. Was it Oscar Wilde who said "Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit and the highest from of vulgarity"? I have never found Gervaise to be funny or Sasha Baron Cohen or Russell Brand. They are tawdry and lacking in talent. We and USA would be well rid of them.

Gervaise showed his limitations when, as compere of the Princess Diana Tribute Show, organised by Princes William and Harry, he was forced to ad-lib for a few minutes.
The result was cringe making in the extreme, he failed miserably!
I agree with O'Bursledon on the other two as well!!

Wow. Lorelei...is this really meant to be journalism?

This article with it's three year old photo is nothing more than shameless axe grinding for people who resent the fact that Gervais is the most successful comedian in the world.

Hosting award ceremonies is nothing more than a side gig with a big pay check for those in the entertainment industry.

Personally I think his third stint was an example of how hosting is meant to be done, and by far his best performance of the three.

Gervais only aims to appeal to those with a like minded sense of humour, but of course it all comes down to opinion in the end with regard to who or what you find funny. What I think most bothers people is his success and the fact he can get away with just about anything.

I believe everyone's entitled to their opinion. But arrogantly asserting your opinion as fact is childish and feeble at the end of the day, example: trying to use the fact you saw Gervais live as proof he's not funny...that only proves you turned up, nothing else. Again, feeble.

The general consensus is that Gervais is not funny. His latest TV series bombed. Lestevier26 is correct in saying he appeals to those with a like sense of humour, but that's not saying much. I think he will eventually go the way of the 70s dinosaurs who are now playing the holiday camps in that his audience will be 'retro' as well as Harry Enfield who's last series was also 'unfunny'. Personal tastes will always differ.

What general consensus?

Am I to trust that you've had this 'information' verified'... or is it purely based on the opinions of you and the twelve people in your social?

I also think it decidedly unlikely that Gervais will end up 'playing the holiday camps' considering he's currently worth about £50 million.

Actually, the general consensus is that he's the best loved and most popular comedian in the world. This has been the case for about ten years now. Harry Enfield only enjoyed a handful of years of popularity - and that was only in England. The genuine consensus is based mainly on Gervaises popularity and success. It's incontrovertible really. This article is really only for people like you who are bitter that your own favourite comedian is no longer on top (Russ Abott maybe?)

But I do concede one thing: Life's too short was a bit pants. But considering the rest of his stuff is genius, I'll let him off. Also, Life's Too Short had the highest ratings on The BBC iplayer, so can hardly be called a flop.

"Where did all the funny go?" When it comes to Ricky Gervias, there was never any there in the first place. In character or as himself, his humourless moans and rants make me cringe.

Ok...who is funny then? Who's your favourite comedian?

Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais came under fire for not being funny enough at this year's event Ricky Gervais
