IT’S all change at an Eastleigh pub which has a new hand at the helm and now opens at 7am.
The Wagon Works opened almost a year ago on the site of the old Home Tavern, Eastleigh, and has gone from strength-to-strength attracting new customers and forging an important place in the heart of the community.
This is one of the most aspects to keep going according to new boss Ami Sawyer, 23, who has just been promoted from shift manager and has been at the new outlet since it first opened its doors.
The Hampshire girl has worked for the Wetherspoon pub chain since she was 18 and started off as a part-time bar worker.
She said: “I am looking forward to keeping up the high standards and doing everything we can to make this a great place for locals to come and enjoy themselves.
“We have such lovely customers we are really lucky.
“I would guess we have about 300 locals. We are a community pub in the town centre.
“I think there are a lot of things that attract people to us here; great food, the location – the centre right by the bus and train stations, everyone knows Wetherspoons’ offer good value, excellent customer service and really nice locals from all ages.
“Some people come in because of the good prices but then keep coming because they like the pub.
“We have excellent staff who create a really good atmosphere.”
She went on to say the food is a massive draw and with a new early opening time lots of locals and commuters are coming in for a full English or a strong cup of coffee before they start the day.
As well as plenty of spaces inside there is a large beer garden out of the back with a heated, covered area.
The pub has four quiz and fruit machines, three wide screen televisions and a no music policy.
To emphasise the community feel the pub has put up a notice board and attracted school and charity groups as well as Camra.
The group often praise the chain for its commitment to real ale.
The pub also holds regular beer and wine festivals – the next wine festival is on until June 10.

There are community pubs within Eastleigh that all do a good job in keeping the community feel within their estates but the Wagon Works is not one of them. Since opening I have only visited it twice, the reason is due to the robotic barstaff and the poor standards of customer service and overcooked food. Yes their drinks may be cheap, but where are the things that good community pubs have, such like Darts & Pool teams, events for all the family etc.
The Wagon works is nothing more than a glorified watering hole and will never be anything else. Unfortunately all the decent members clubs and community pubs are now at threat due to this invasion brought on by another chain pub.
