in Pub Reviews
As the gravel driveway crunches underfoot, the Star Inn in East Tytherley is found nestling behind a row of thick, evergreen trees.
Just off Romsey Road, the building has a definite cottage charm to it – despite the life-sized chess set laid out next to the main entrance.
Once inside the rustic theme continues with the atmosphere being more like Grandma’s living room than a local pub.
The warmth and homeliness of the building is matched by the friendly welcome offered by the staff and patrons.
“The Star is a real hub for the local community,” said barmaid Marisa Swift, “people know each other very well and it's very sociable.”
That’s not to say outsiders are unwelcome, owner Lesley Newitt treats all her customers like family.
Lesley runs the pub with her husband Alan and head chef son Justin, who manages the kitchen as a solo operation.
He takes pride in sourcing local produce where possible and makes his own bread, whole grain mustard, biscuits and ice cream.
With Alan landscaping the gardens and grounds, The Star Inn plans to grow its own vegetables for use in the kitchen.
The quality of food and service offered by the Star Inn has seen it accumulate quite a reputation locally.
The eclectic menu, including partridge, scallops and duck, has the range and depth of any good gastropub.
So whether you are from the area or otherwise, Sunday lunch is definitely worth a visit. There is of course one rule… The chess set is only to be played with once you have finished your dinner.
