The Wheel Inn Sway Road, Pennington

IT is a former blacksmith’s workshop that has been pulling in punters as a country pub since the 1800s.

The Wheel Inn in Pennington is the quintessential country pub which prides itself on doing the simple things in life well – food and drink.

It goes out of its way to offer a range of real ales from all over Hampshire – and nothing goes better with a good beer than proper home-cooked food.

And just because it’s proper food doesn’t mean it will break the bank.

Those on a budget will love the £3.99 menu, while those wanting to splash out can do so on a range of more extravagant offerings.

Landlady Marie Richards, alongside landlord Pete Walters, has been at the helm of The Wheel for the past 18 months.

She said: “We are a traditional village pub, that’s what we do best.

“We serve proper beer and great home-cooked food.

“We have a really varied mix of customers from golden oldies to youngsters and everyone in between.”

The pub boasts regular live music and once a month holds a jam session for aspiring musicians.

This year the pub has teamed up with legendary Hampshire band and Wheel regulars The Plonkers to sponsor their float in the Lymington carnival.

Ever open to suggestions, in a bid to keep its younger clientele happy, the Wheel Inn recently staged its very first drum ’n’ bass night – which was a great success.

The pub is steeped in history, having started off life as a blacksmith’s workshop in 1770 before being turned into a hostelry in 1871.

Found on a triangle on the link road between Lymington and Hordle, the Wheel Inn would have once been a welcome sight to weary travellers.

These days it is equally as welcome – and for those that don’t have a horse and cart to taxi them home, there’s an 11.45pm bus to take you back to civilisation.
