in Pub Reviews
Historic local pub The Three Tuns, located in Romsey, on the edge of the Test Valley, has been re-opened by the team behind Winchester’s award-winning Chesil Rectory Restaurant.
Sympathetically refurbished throughout, the Grade II listed building now features fine botanical prints and vintage chandeliers yet it’s still brimming with authentic charm.
New head chef is Hampshire-born James Wills. Originally from Lyndhurst, James trained at Brockenhurst College. He then worked in some of the finest eateries including Bentley’s seafood Restaurant, The Belvedere, Fortnum & Mason, all in London. He then took the position of sous chef at Winchester’s Chesil Rectory for 18 months.
James recently won young Dorset chef of the year at the Dorset Seafood Festival, with Mark Hix on the panel of judges.
New owner Mark Dodd commented: “James brings with him exceptional energy and enthusiasm as well as a genuine passion for food.”
He has created a menu featuring quality traditional pub classics: Starters include warm Scotch egg, Welsh rarebit and potted pheasant, with mains such as pies, platters and fish and chips; puds include treacle tart or crumble and custard – simple, delicious and perfect comfort food for a winter’s day.
Mark Dodd added: “The Three Tuns is a great neighbourhood pub with a lovely atmosphere. The Chesil Rectory Team are absolutely delighted to bring it back to the heart of the community. A big thank you to all the neighbours who have been so welcoming.”
The Three Tuns, located five minutes’ walk from Market Place close to Broadlands Country Estate, is well placed for lunch when exploring the market town of Romsey or for a well-earned pint at the end of a countryside walk and the nearby Test Way.
With open fires and warm and welcoming atmosphere it’s the perfect spot for real ale, cracking wines, and great coffee.
Diners can enjoy simple bar snacks and light lunches or go the whole hog and have a three-course dinner or a mighty Sunday roast. Children welcome at weekends. The Three Tuns: 58 Middlebridge Street , Romsey, Hampshire, SO51 8HL. Tel 01794 512 639 / Enquiries@the3tuns.co.uk.
