What do Prince William, Matt Le Tissier and the Nescafe coffee woman all have in common?

They are all said to have enjoyed the rustic charms of The Farmer’s Home in Durley. The watering hole in Heathen Street is an old country pub set in the beautiful rural countryside.

The old coaching inn traces back to the 18th century where it was a hospitable stop for travellers to and from the city.

Landlord Michael Jarvis has owned the pub since 1989 and has kept the pub traditional in every way.

Its character remains intact with old wood beams, an open log fire and modest homely decor.

There is no darts board, no pool table and no television, making it a pleasant escape from modern luxuries.

The menu uses locally sourced produce ranging from home-made pies to freshly caught lobster, which is prepared by the resident chef and manager Shaun Angel.

Mr Jarvis is also a keen supporter of the local Durley football team and provides chips and sandwiches every Saturday to players and staff.

However, it is not just the local football team who have visited the pub – legend has it that after Southampton Football Club won the FA Cup in 1976 it was to this pub they came back to celebrate their victory.

There are rumours that the pub has more spirits than meets the eye.

Staff talk of how the bell in the pub has been rung without anyone being near it and have spoken of strange noises being heard in the kitchen when in the pub alone.

Even the locals have been spooked by the old clocks hands moving backwards without anyone touching it.

Supervisor Nicola Colven runs front of house and makes diners and drinkers welcome. She offers friendly service and creates a relaxed atmosphere. There are two restaurant areas separated by a bar making it great for small and large events.

It has a large garden and a playground making it family friendly and a hit with walkers.

The pub is popular with regulars and guests alike so it is advisable to book. For a table call the number below.
