FUNNY and revealing. Not words I would have ordinarily associated with cricket, but last night two of the game’s best-known commentators took to the Mayflower stage to give their take on the game.

An Evening with Boycott & Aggers has been playing off and on to audiences for more than a year, with the pair seamlessly transferring their on-air chemistry and banter to the stage.

Like his commentary, Geoffrey Boycott, pictured, takes no prisoners as he and Jonathan Agnew guide the audience through a series of memories, anecdotes and damn good yarns from their careers while delivering their verdicts on a range of topics dominating the sport.

The recent disaster that was the Ashes tour and more particularly Alistair Cook’s captaincy thereof comes in for particular treatment.

The controversy over the increasing tendency to “chuck the ball” and whether there would ever be anyone capable of managing Kevin Pietersen are all robustly dealt with by the uncompromising Boycott.

His favourite subject, namely himself, is beautifully sent up when Aggers turns quiz show host and stages Mastermind, with Boycott’s specialist subject being – Geoffrey Boycott.

The second half is opened up to the audience with questions on a range of subjects.

Boycott deals candidly with his battle with cancer, but even that ends on a laugh, with Aggers drawing a comparison with Boycott falling asleep regularly while undergoing treatment with those who watched his laboured batting style.

“Difference was I was still batting when you woke up,” Boycott quipped.

Just as on Test Match Special, the pair are quite the double act.

The simple formula of two great characters telling it like it is, or was in most cases, made for a great night.

It was a smashing show for any cricket fan or even those who just enjoy a good story that is told with honesty, authority and humour.
