SHELL-shaped footlights, an audience resplendent in period costume and a master of ceremonies waxing lyrical about a pot-pourri of phantasmagorical performances will create the perfect prelude to the return of Old Time Music Hall to the Theatre Royal Winchester tomorrow.

Winchester’s very own Richard Chisnell will be introducing a glittering array of local talent, including popular local vocalists, dancers, jugglers, a ukulele band, a magician and a titillating troupe of high-kicking can-can dancers.

Singers from Winchester Musical and Operatic Society and Colden Common Music and Drama Group will revive the melodies of yesteryear, while devotees of a cappella music will thrill to the quintessentially male quartet Designer Stubble.

The Worthy Players and members of the Blue Apple Theatre punctuate the programme with moments of melodrama and The Geriactors tell tales of dastardly deeds.

In true music hall tradition there will be plenty of audience participation and it is all in aid of the Mayor of Winchester’s charities.

“At the beginning of my mayoral year I promised colour, excitement and fun,” said the mayor, Cllr Eileen Berry.

“This Old Time Music Hall has it all and rehearsals suggest that it is going to be a very special evening.

“It will take those of a certain age down memory lane and show the younger members of our audience the way things were during the good old days.”

To add a little extra sparkle, the producers are inviting members of the audience to attend in period costume, the Mayor of Winchester offering prizes for the best dressed lady, the best dressed gentleman and the finest lady’s hat.

Tickets at £10 are on sale now from the Theatre Royal box office and are selling quickly.
