Hairspray is as big-hearted as its lead is big-boned. The show manages to accommodate the serious issues of segregation and human rights into an exuberant and frothy plot.

Tracey Turnbald (Sarah Partridge) led from the front with her endless good nature and optimism.

Good genes clearly run in the family as her Mum, Edna (Jack Edwards) and Dad, Wilbur (Christopher Brooke) were a joy to behold.

Their duet and laughter was infectious and their individual characters were carefully crafted but looked effortless.

The talent was abundant and I would mention everyone if able, but special credits go to Motormouth Maybelle (Marlene Hill) for her rich and powerful vocals, Seaweed (Nyakeh Tutange) whose elastic body was too cool for school and Penny (Kayleigh Pendry) who put the D in ditzy.

The singing was top notch and the cast were accompanied by an accomplished orchestra, led by Andrew Woodford. Even this was surpassed by the precise and flamboyant choreography.

The only let down was the occasionally dissonant sound.

One not to miss!
