WRITTEN in 2001, this musical explores the relationship between two American in their twenties, up-and-coming novelist Jamie Wellerstein and aspiring actress Cathy Hiatt.
What makes the story so intriguing is that Cathy recounts the relationship in reverse, starting at its demise, while Jamie follows it from their first date: their timelines only overlap in the middle.
Daniella Gambier and Teddy Clements were excellent in the roles, not so much singing and acting them as inhabiting them with conviction.
Both were particularly affecting when their relationship arcs were at their darkest, although they conveyed the shifts in tone with subtlety.
This was a cleverly staged show, directed with verve and empathy with the material. Placing the musicians in the middle to divide the light and dark shades of the storyline worked particularly well.
The musical direction, lighting and sound were all of the highest quality. A delight.
