Southampton’s Nuffield Theatre plays host to Polly Teale’s adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s well known fairytale, The Little Mermaid.

Teale uses this backdrop as a medium to address a number of contemporary teenage issues including: peer pressure, loss of innocence and eating disorders.

The play, set both above and below the water, uses this as a divider between reality and fiction which unfolds through the eyes of the teenage Blue who finds escapism in writing; it also allows the story and Blue’s real life to intertwine and her near constant presence on the stage, acts as a reminder that the world below is as much a part of her own thoughts as the reality above.

The ensemble cast move seamlessly around the stage, constantly jump-rolling between sea and earth creatures; from their captivating Mermaid movements to the provocative sea-witch ensemble, the contrasting performances echoing themes of innocence and corruption.

In addition to the stellar Shared Experience ensemble, the company are joined in each city by a chorus of “Mermalettes” comprising of 15 local girls who are both party goers and peace protestors, however it is the eerie background singing and movement of the underwater mermaid scenes that bewitches the audience and draws them into the heart of the action.

A thoroughly enjoyable production that is both thought provoking and poignantly funny in places.

Shared Experience are currently touring Mermaid until May 23rd. Full details can be found on their website sharedexperience.org.uk.
