HAMPSHIRE musical theatre school, The Academy of Musical Theatre, will be making its debut at the King's Theatre in Southsea on Saturday, July 11, with not one, but two fantastic musicals.

The junior students will be performing the jazzy and dynamic Disney hit, The Aristocats, adapted for the stage for a younger audience. Following this will be the Broadway smash hit, Thoroughly Modern Millie, based on the musical film of the same name, performed by the senior students.

Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr. is a high-spirited musical romp, set in New York City in 1922, when young Millie Dillmount has just moved to the big city in search of a new life for herself.

It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz, in a time when women were beginning to enter the workforce and the rules of love and social behaviour were changing forever.

Featuring fantastic tap numbers and a talented cast of young people aged between seven and 18 years, this wonderful musical will entertain audiences of all ages.

The Academy of Musical Theatre (AMT) is a local independently run school with nearly 100 students which focuses on musical theatre and dance training.

Run by local, professionally trained teachers, AMT provides fun filled classes in ballet, tap, modern and musical theatre for all abilities, each Saturday during term time.

Caroline Bennett, co-director of the Academy of Musical Theatre, said: “We are really excited to finally be performing at the Kings Theatre.

"Our students have been working on both musicals since January and we are thrilled with what they have achieved.

"Everyone involved has stepped up and realised that although this is a junior production, we don’t need to treat it as such.

"We’ve come at it with an adult approach, and made it the best show that we can.”

It’s almost impossible to sit still and not tap your feet during any musical theatre number in The Aristocats and Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.

Both shows are energetic, musical comedies that will have audiences leaving the theatre with a big smile on their face.
