WITH a shiny pink Cadillac parked conspicuously outside the Pavilion Theatre, a popular 1950s photo-booth in the foyer, and half the enthusiastic audience dressed up as Danny and Sandy, the scene was set for Grease.

One of the most popular musicals in the world, the love/hate/love story of cool rocker Danny and good girl Sandy remains endearing, with the hooky pop songs eternally catchy.

The lively atmosphere of 1950s America is conveyed with Rydell High School’s vivacious cheerleaders, the savvy Pink Ladies, and the leather-jacketed T-Birds with their explosive homage to teenagers’ cars Greased Lightnin’.

Choreography is precise, costumes and lighting are atmospheric, and the humour’s sharp – “Have a smoke; it won’t kill you!”

The American accents are generally convincing, although some diction is occasionally indistinct, with opening night microphone uncertainties.

Ensemble vocals are strong, the live band supportive, and some numbers are outstanding.

As Sandy, Becky Bagnall delivers a haunting Hopelessly Devoted To You, and as Danny, Neil Tallant nails the beautiful ballad Sandy, although the overhead projected photos are unfortunately unclear. Almost stealing the showA near show-stealer is Beauty School Drop Out with its ethereal and compelling lighting.

Celebrating its 61st successful year, BBLOC (Bournemouth & Boscombe Light Opera Company) again delivers a show that’s entertaining, impressive and very professional.

On a “summer night” in Bournemouth, Grease is still “the word” and “the one that you want”.

Runs until Saturday. Matinees Thursday and Saturday at 2.30.
