SOUTHAMPTON Operatic Society will be bursting into The Berry Theatre next week with the classic Warner Brown version of the family favourite musical, Half a Sixpence.

Half a Sixpence tells the tale of Arthur Kipps, a young man who was taken from his orphanage home as a boy and left his childhood sweetheart, Ann, half a sixpence to remember him by. While Ann’s love remains constant, Artie inherits a fortune, chases a dream and discovers – to his cost – that money doesn’t buy happiness.

This traditional version includes all the songs that fans will remember from the sixties film with Tommy Steele, including “Flash, Bang, Wallop”, “All In The Cause of Economy” and the lilting “Half a Sixpence” itself.

The props list for the show called for a banjo, so last week SOS popped over to the Music Xchange in Portswood and picked up a lovely second hand instrument. They will be advertising it for sale on their Facebook page as soon as the show is over (as they would rather sell it at a significant loss than have it gathering dust in the props cupboard) so if you’re interested please make them an offer!

The Show runs from Thursday June 30 to Saturday July 2. Evening performances at 7.30pm, Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets £13 / £12 concessions, 10% discount for groups of 10+.
