Grease

South Downe Musical Society

Ferneham Hall, Fareham

A massive success, initially on stage, but best known for the subsequent blockbuster film, this colourful production contained all the ingredients to send the audience home singing. Helen Stoddart has consistently received rave reviews as an actor but here, taking on the dual roles of director and choreographer, she delivered an excellent, entertaining, show.

The extended stage enabled the T-Birds and Pink Ladies, based on opposite sides and frequently joined by the lively ensemble, to make the most of every opportunity to impress with energetic dance routines. Alan Pring’s orchestra belted out all the favourite tunes and the singing didn’t disappoint. Perry Ralls and Hannah Ali nailed their solos, as Danny and Sandy, but Kimberley Harvey outshone them, for me, as Rizzo. I also particularly enjoyed Olli Heath’s solo (as Doody) and Steve Reading’s lavish Teen Angel sequence that brought the house down. Great sound, light, costumes and props all contributed equally to a cracking show.
