Teechers, RAODS, The Plaza, Romsey

Acclaimed play writer, John Godber wrote Teechers as a candid response to his experiences as a teacher, highlighting perceived failures in the system and individuals, that still ring true today.

It is, however, a comedy with soul, rather than a rant.

Told through the eyes of three school leavers, in their end of year play, they narrate the story of their drama teacher’s first year in a downtrodden school in a socially deprived area.

The trio, Salty (Katie-Ann Miles), Gail (Freya Burnside) and Hobby (Anna Mitchell) were exuberant and vibrant and their timing was immaculate, as they utilised basic props to signpost the numerous characters they each played. I couldn’t single out anyone, or at least they all deserved an accolade for their skill at bringing out the best, in this fast-paced and funny script.

This must also be in part due to first-rate direction. This comedy will resonate with anyone who went to school in the 80s and is well worth a look.
