Calamity Jane
Winchester Musicals & Opera Society
Theatre Royal Winchester
Currently enjoying a revival, this adaptation of the 1953 film transported us to Deadwood City, South Dakota. With a clutch of memorable songs (for those of a certain age), this was a vibrant, good-looking show driven by John Sparrow’s wonderful orchestra, featuring a splendid brass section.
Director Liz Petley-Jones and David Freemantle’s set was a sight to see although not without problems. Technically, the lighting was fine however the sound was inconsistent, seated as I was at the end of a row and very close to a speaker.
Rushed American accents are a recurring bete-noir in musical theatre. That said, Emma Jane Smith was a whirlwind in the title role, Iain Steel ultra-cool as Bill Hickock and Kimberley James engaging as Katie Brown.
In support, Adrian Hickford (‘Lootenant’), Simon Meanwell-Brown (Francis) and Annie Tatnall’s excellent cameo (as Adelaide) were complemented by a classy ensemble, with delightful choreography from Chrissy Finn.
No dead-wood here!
