MOUNTBATTEN Players’ new version of Aladdin took the familiar elements of pantomime and of the story and gave them a bold, gloriously technicolored presentation.

Writer/director Chris Davis has produced a sharp, witty script that is suitable for a family audience but has much to be enjoyed by the adults present. Whilst long, the show moved at a nimble pace with nary a dawdle along the way.

With flying carpets, impressive stage design and wonderful costumes, this was a production heavy on spectacle and, dare I say, magic.

The musical numbers were handled with aplomb and there was some impressive choreography: a romantic duet made into a tap dance was a particular delight.

The talented cast showed themselves very much on top of their game. The characters were all beautifully drawn and there were many delights from the interpretations of the roles.

This was panto as it should be.
