Aladdin
Prop Box Youth Theatre
Itchen College Theatre
For their first ever production, Prop Box Youth Theatre has tackled the perennial seasonal favourite of Aladdin, giving them plenty of scope to indulge in all the silliness, singing and audience participation of the pantomime.
This was a lively and energetic show that showcased the hard work and enthusiasm of its youthful cast. Choreographers Molly Coles and Amy Fern produced some really catchy entertaining dance routines, which the cast performed with great gusto. The costumes were nicely done and certainly colourful. The song choice was amusingly diverse but effective: who knew The Who would fit so well into a panto?
The production was blessed by strong central performances from Maja Kniola (Aladdin) and Grace Hales (So Shi). Owen Dennis (Widow Twankey) and Sam Benham (Wishee Washee) showed a natural confidence and great stage presence.
More confident stagecraft and pacing will come with time, but this was a fun first outing.
