Don Juan in Soho, Southampton Solent University Performance
12:00pm Monday 26th November 2012 in Curtain Call By Karen Robson
NOT A play for the faint-hearted, nor indeed the easily offended, Southampton Solent Performance's production of Patrick Marber’s Moliere adaptation was seeringly honest and delightfully scurrilous.
At a lean 100 minutes (including interval) this was a niftily paced and intense experience that grabbed the audience by the scruff of its neck and ever tightened its grip. Staged with thought and great attention to detail, some of the set pieces were wonderfully choreographed.
At its heart was a compelling performance by Thom Goodey as the amoral Don Juan, capturing perfectly the qualities of a character who fascinated and repelled in equal measure and was unrepentantly true to himself.
Equally impressive was Dave Steemson as the sly, complicit Stan, ever tied to a master he both loved and hated.
