A Christmas Charivari, Maskers Theatre Company, Maskers Studio

PICKING our way through puddles and potholes on a miserable night, a first visit to the venue didn’t engender the same level of anticipation that more formal theatres do, but once inside, the intimate venue was warm and welcoming.

The stage was constructed and dressed beautifully by Roger Lockett, Gill Buchanan and their teams, with the eight members of the company sitting in-line.

The show consisted of seasonal prose, poems, songs and comedy sketches, with Jenni Watson first to impress and later contributing a highlight with husband Alan as recession-hit couple Portia and Pumpkin.

Eric Petterson displayed his versatility by accompanying himself on guitar and, memorably, with Mike Dukes in a Pete and Dud sketch.

Appropriate sound effects were supplied by Geoff Gandy and John Evans accompanied musical numbers on keyboard. A nice evening but a shame the programme didn’t identify the runningorder or credit the writers of each piece.
