Theatre’s always a gamble, of course, but this production really hit the jackpot! Director Lydia Longman’s very serviceable condensation of Shakespeare’s “Mozartian” comedy is beautifully served by a uniformly excellent cast, 14 strong, who rehearsed and improvised round it for less than a week and then performed it four times on the same day.

Your reviewer saw the four o’clock performance, which made it outdoors into the part of the campus overlooked by Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture of two figures, patches of cloud and sunshine but no rain.

A highlight illustrating the whole – the walk taken by Rosaline (Sarah Divall) and Berowne (Chris Barlow) all the way from stage front to the verdant distance and back again – a perfect pantomime of youthful romance – while the verbal fireworks and adroit clowning continued obliviously on.

Sorry if you missed this lovely soufflé, but filmed highlights will appear on SUSU’s website.
