DESPITE not appearing to offer a specialist musical-theatre degree option, Southampton University has an enviable knack of unearthing exceptional talent.

In Robin Fryer they have one of the best; just three weeks ago, in Little Shop of Horrors, she showed she could sing and dance brilliantly.

Here she added leading-lady to her repertoire, with a wonderfully funny performance as Adelaide, engaged (for 14 years!) to gambler Nathan Detroit.

Brendan Westhoff was also perfectly cast and the pair interacted endearingly.

Debutante Anne-Marie Pinnell sang beautifully as straight-laced Sarah Brown, opposite company veteran Toby Hasler-Winter (Sky Masterson), whose laconic delivery and effortless crooning shone.

Sevan Keoshgerian was a lively Nicely Nicely, but not quite as lively as the (often scantily-clad) dancing girls, for whom choreographer/co-director Lucy Kent deserves great credit.

Adam Castle led the perfect musical soundtrack and director Jeremy McCabe is evidently equally as capable off-stage as he is on it.
