STEPHEN SONDHEIM and George Furth’s ironic show contains more depth than most musicals, with long periods of dialogue that allow the characters to display their various personalities.
First performed by CCADS last year in Chichester, their show was reprised here on home-ground.
Essentially an ensemble piece, every actor was given their fair share of time in the spotlight, with the notable exception of John-Paul McCrohon, once again displaying his talent to direct as well as perform.
McCrohon (as bachelor Robert), surrounded by friends to celebrate his 35th birthday, is increasingly pressurised into making a serious commitment as the five couples expose their own domestic incompatibilities.
He eventually makes a serious move, seducing one of his three girlfriends, airline trolley-dolly April, in an hilarious sequence.
Every member of the cast was excellent, with the fantastic Hat Dance a notable feature and musicians Daf Hughes, Marcus Porter and Sam Elliott deserving a name-check. Good company!
