RUDDIGORE is not a well-known G&S but it should be. It has the silliness one expects from a G&S operetta, larger than life characters (literally) and a superb madrigal, if done well (it was!).

The story goes that the cursed eldest Murgatroyd son is fated to commit a daily crime or face the wrath of his ancestors, including certain death. David Tatnall (director and Desparad Murgatroyd) takes it to a new level of surreal with his Tim Burtonesque production. Sumptuous costumes (Sue Tatnall, Heather Cousins), ethereal make- up (Christina Cleary-Morris and team) and otherworldly lighting (Tony Lawther) keep the focus where it should be – on the talented cast.

Robin Oakapple (Shaun Doddimead ) wrings every last drop of comedy from the script, chasing the village sweetheart, the operatically gifted Rose Maybud (Lisa Axworthy).

However, disloyal but loveable Richard Dauntless (David Putley) has other plans while Oakapple’s dastardly brother Desparard gets his just desserts with the truly Mad Margaret (Vicky Dodimead).

The comic timing is perfect and although the ensemble needed to sharpen their diction the overall effect is harmonious and tightly crafted.

This show is an advert for trying something new. You won’t be disappointed.
