EVERY production of Georg Büchner’s unfinished and fragmentary, but always compelling drama, has to be different, and Hannah Wood and Ben O’Shaughnessy have, in their version, incorporated a Brechtian style and songs (written by the band the Tiger Lillies) brilliantly performed by “The Büchner Five”and sung by Josh Coates and Jenni Norfolk, making for a richly entertaining evening, despite the grim story.

Woyzeck (Shaun Britton) – mentally frail, brutally experimented upon by a doctor (Rick Barter ) and humiliated by his wife’s (Jess Hawkins) dalliance with a superior officer, the Drum Major (Tony Pardoe) – is driven to murder.

Elliot Conduit as Andre, Woyzeck’s only friend, must represent several debuts in a fine cast that is unfazed by this challenging material, so that due compliments may also be paid to Rob King’s technical team that produces such stunning lighting, with sound effects designed by Britton.
