STAGING Les Miserables is certainly not an easy option, particularly finding something fresh to say in the wake of the iconic West End show.

Yet Barton Peveril has shown again that it has what it takes.

Director Gemma Witcomb’s gripping new production combines atmosphere and emotion with commanding story telling.

The show was staged with bravado, choreographing the action with precision, making great use of lighting and drawing extraordinary performances from the cast.

Full marks too to conductor Bryan Postlethwaite and the orchestra.

This was a show that was not only well sung, but had beautifully interpreted characters.

While a fine ensemble production, all praise should go to Rhian Lynch (Fantine), Felicia Gray (Eponine), George Lambourne (Marius), Charlie Nicholas (Javert) and Jennifer Walker and James Taylor (the Thenadiers). And at the centre was a towering performance of depth and maturity by Jack ShawDownie as Jean Valjean.
