PERFORMERS from The Mountbatten School are to tackle Mermaid next week.

Mermaid is a visually inventive ensemble production, based upon the book by Hans Christian Anderson.

Set in the modern day, the story explores the pressure on teenagers to grow up quickly and abandon play, becoming preoccupied by appearance, judging one another and seeing one another as competitors.

Follow the story of Blue as she starts to bring to life the story inside her bedroom, reinventing the original fairytale.

Below the ocean there is no death or pain or separation. Above the water is the modern world beset with war, poverty and need.

On her sixteenth birthday, a mermaid rises up to the surface, leaving her childhood behind forever when she falls in love with a mortal prince. She knows that she can no longer live at the bottom of the ocean, but must she destroy herself in order to be loved?

The show takes to the stage at the Romsey school's Lantern Theatre from Thursday to Saturday.

Tickets: 01794 502502.
