The Odyssey

Nuffield Theatre, Southampton
Adapted by David Farr, this modern re-telling of Homer's classic tale is set in a modern refugee camp. While Odysseus's talk of ancient gods, beautiful enchantresses and the monstrous man-eating Cyclops might seem fanciful in a modern context, the concept of epic life changing journeys and the disassociation of those rendered stateless parallels the experiences of modern day refugees.
Director Max Lindsay has created a compelling and visually stunning production that has an excellent use of lighting and sound. Designer James Donnelly's set perfectly encapsulates the oppressive grimness of such institutional facilities, its very greyness both sinister and depressing.
The cast as ever showed real commitment and zeal in their performances, working extremely well as an ensemble. The use of six actors to play Odysseus was an interesting device that paid off, cleverly underscoring the idea of many tales and many voices.
