REVIEW: FREELANCERS SUSU SHOWSTOPPERS THE ANNEXE
A NEW comedy musical based in a low brow newspaper office by fellow students Pittman and Smith combined the elements of "Anchorman" and "The Thick of It" to make a very funny and topical look at current broadsheet news. The aptly named Becky Rooks (Emily Bradshaw on fire tonight) bullies her Staff with taught and explosive smooth one-liners. Enter Daniel Balance (a charming and believable Josh Vaastra) as the naïve new journo on the block hoping to make his way legitimately with truth and the story unfolds : will he or won't he sell out to Rebecca and a suitably slimy Joseph Hand as boss Jeff Eff-Ef
Totally irreverent and not for the faint hearted, the script and score both bubbled and relished the demons of spin in modern life.
Comic timing honours go to Charlie Randall, hilarious as hapless Paul Muddle. Sean Gilbady directed with flare this talented cast who twisted the night away.
