The Wizard of Oz, Spot On Productions, The Point
This demanding show marked the inaugural production for the locally-based new company, with lots of scene changes and special effects adding to the pressure on Director Alick Leech. His involvement with local company Scenery Solutions will perhaps have eased the financial burden and the sets were impressive, if not always smoothly transitioned and lit.
Morgan Dunn was bright as a button as Dorothy, with a lovely voice, a performance matched only by Graham Barnes as the Cowardly Lion. There were lots of comic moments but the Lion losing his wig was the best!
Dave Smith also stood out (as Scarecrow’s do), Toby Walker was Tinman and I enjoyed the brief appearances from Mick Attwood (Wizard) and Millie Pack who sang well as Gloria. Martin Bennetts’ orchestra was ‘spot on’, as was the sound, but as work in progress this was a good starting point and I look forward to seeing future shows.
