Jesus Christ Superstar

Freemantle United Reformed Church

Amateur dramatic societies fall into either of two categories; those that fill theatres, with orchestras, hired costumes and sets and those found in halls, using backing tapes, hand-made costumes and self-build sets. Falling into the latter category this show was all the more impressive for it.

Ed Corbett played Christ and, although not possessing as strong a voice as others, nevertheless carried it off convincingly. V

ocally, the stars were Howard Corbett, blessed with an iconic rock-star voice that made him perfectly suited to his casting as Judas, and Amber Spencer who sang beautifully as Mary Magdalene.

Scott Armstrong was a powerful Pilate and Michael Porter led a wonderfully camp cabaret scene as Herod. The ensemble sang powerfully in-tune, lighting and sound were good, the basic set worked very well and the hanging and crucifixion scenes were tasteful and impressively enacted.

Howard Corbett (Producer) and Michael Porter (Director) should be well-pleased with their efforts.
