REVIEW: ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’

GOOD to see The Villagers on such fine form, here presenting one of the Bard’s best-loved comedies in the company’s 30th Anniversary production.
It’s a frivolous piece but with great humour and a bizarre range of individuals that had the brave audience chuckling throughout on a damp evening.
Director Ian Wright handled the central character of Sir John with relish, suffering the many indignities inflicted on him. As the Merry Wives, Pat Aird and Annette Gillies were excellent in their machinations, while their husbands (John Shillitoe and Rob Spraggs) gave great support.
Top acting honours, too, to Andy White as the verbose Welsh Parson Sir Hugh, Sean Kimber as the ludicrous French Doctor Caius, and Charlene Lomas as a pert Mistress Quickly.
Easy to follow, and with attractive live period music by The Little Woodham Sinfonia, this was a most enjoyable evening, and a big feather in the company’s cap”.
