REVIEW: Blood Brothers (the play)

RAODS Youth

Plaza Theatre, Romsey

SHARING the same source material as the perhaps better known musical version, stripped of the musical numbers the play Blood Brothers was an altogether more sparse and melancholy piece.

The relatively simple yet highly effective set provided the perfect backdrop to the action and reinforced ideas of social divisions. Director Becky Mills handled the material with considerable flair, choreographing the action well to create a fluid and gripping show.

This was a strongly acted production. Diana Thomas was impressive Mrs Johnston, as was Amelia Treasure as Mrs Lyons. The conceit of casting Anna and Isabel Mitchell as the blood brothers Mickey and Eddie was a bold one. They had great stage presence and were very effective in the roles. However as they never looked anything other than girls dressed as boys, in the latter half of the play this slightly distracted from the gritty realism.
