REVIEW: LADIES DOWN UNDER

Poulner Players

1st Poulner Scout Hall, Poulner

“Ladies down under” is the sequel to last year’s popular production, “Ladies day” and I felt lucky to have seen both, because whilst both shows function independently, it adds to the closeness you feel for the characters, when you know their backstory and have met them before. The female quartet from the fish packing factory in Hull, have come into money and decide to celebrate with a trip down under, but money doesn’t make the man (or woman) and each harbours a deep-seated insecurity, which an impromptu trip to Uluru unmasks. As before, the women, Shelley (Steph Haywood), Linda (Adele Buxton), Pearl (Janet West) and Jan (Sally Whyte) bounce off each other convincingly, with an increased depth that no doubt comes from living as their character for the second time. The lads, Joe (Nathan East) and Danny (John West) have no easy time, playing a number of diverse characters in addition to their main egos. Altogether this is a funny and heart-warming journey with old friends.
