THE classic musical Calamity Jane blows in from the Windy City to Winchester’s Theatre Royal next month.

Winchester Musical and Opera Society’s autumn visit to the theatre promises to be a treat for all between November 16-19.

Director Liz Petley Jones’s production promises to be grittier than the squeaky clean Hollywood film version, delving back to the roots of the Gold Rush days. Life centres on The Golden Garter Saloon with its ready supply of drink, women, gambling and rough’n ready homespun entertainment.

Hard-working and tough, the women keep the place going while Calamity Jane, played by Emma-Jane Smith, survives in this man's world by dressing and behaving like a man herself and running The Deadwood Stage.

The arrival of ‘would be' actress, Katie Brown, entrances the town and captivates the dashing 'lieutenant' Danny Gilmartin on whom Calamity has set her heart. Katie also mesmerises hard-shooting gambler, and Calamity's best friend, Wild Bill Hickok.

With an Oscar-nominated score that includes The Black Hills of Dakota, The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away), Just Blew in from The Windy City and, of course, Secret Love, this production gets to the heart and soul of the musical.

Gritty and Hilarious, Calamity Jane is rollin' into town on board the Deadwood Stage.
