Despite closing after only six months in the West End, this very clever, very funny, tale of sexual inequality has proved popular nonetheless. It's 1968 and the Ford sewing machinists, led by Rita O'Grady, discover that they are to be paid less than men doing skilled work and go on strike. Helen Stoddart, Director John-Paul McCrohon's casting as Rita, gave a top-of-the-range performance, equally laced with angst and pathos as she took on the union and establishment single-handedly - and won, at personal cost. Matt Sackman was impressive as neglected husband Eddie, but overshadowed by Alan Jenkins (hilarious as Harold Wilson) and Sue Rourke (as Barbara Castle). Danny Owen (as Ford heavyweight Mr Tooley,) and Jane Pegler (as Connie) also shone. Slick scene changes and ensemble work, all topped off by Alan Pring's orchestra. Top Gear!
