AS gaffes go it was pretty epic.

It was all going swimmingly at Hollywood's glitziest night of the year until it got to the biggest prize of the night. The coveted Best Picture award was initially given to the wrong winner and chaos ensued.

Cue shock from the audience that even Academy Award winning actors failed to hide and social media meltdown as it became clear that a major cock up had occurred.

Bonnie and Clyde stars Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented the award to La La Land after a moment’s hesitation – only to realise they had been given the Best Actress card again.

In the bedlam that followed, both casts took to the stage before the real winner was revealed as Moonlight – with La La Land’s team being forced to concede, hand over their statuettes and walk back to their seats with their tails between their legs.

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel was quite right when he proclaimed it the weirdest TV finale since Lost and I'm still trying to work that one out.

It did remind me of our own beloved Curtain Call awards.

We're very fond of dubbing them the Oscars of the South, but with the red carpet and two giant gold statuettes on stage the similarities pretty much end.

And we've never quite managed to cock it up in quite such spectacular fashion.

Although, I did go pretty close one year, accidentally allowing the results to be seen for a few minutes on the Curtain Call page ahead of the ceremony.

In my defence, I was pregnant, exhausted, emotional and prone to the odd mistake, particularly when I couldn't have my usual couple of glasses of Dutch courage before going on stage at the awards. But I was mortified.

With one or two notable exceptions, the few members of our lovely audience who saw the piece entered into the spirit of the event and averted their eyes for the short time it was out there in the ether.

I know our lovely organiser Jo Richardson, who is the most organised woman on the planet, would never let an envelope containing the wrong winner slip through the net. Well, touch wood.

At least my Curtain Call gaffe wasn't on live TV.

To be honest, the news took my mind off my misery at having returned trophyless from Wembley that night.

There's nothing like live entertainment I say.
