9:05am Tuesday 27th September 2011 in Curtain Call By Alan Johns
FIRST night sound and lighting issues sadly marred what was otherwise a fine production by John-Paul McCrohon of Harper Lee’s set-book, the ultimately tragic tale of racial prejudice in 1930s Alabama.
With a fair smattering of youngsters in the audience, possibly with an eye on exams next year, the minimalist, but effective, stage was set-fair for another strong offering from this reputable company.
Caroline Westmorland (as Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch) was personable and confident in her role as the reminiscing narrator, although a combination of a fast delivery, coupled with a strong Southern States accent made following her dialogue difficult at times.
Of those who suffered least from being largely inaudible, Sally Goddard shone as the young Scout and Kevin Redfern’s performance (as Atticus Finch) peaked as he made his impassioned closing courtroom speech.
Charlotte Mackie and Pete Westmorland’s second act performances as Mayella and Bob Ewell were perfectly played.
