10:11am Thursday 13th October 2011 in Curtain Call By Rebecca Case
SET in New York, this rom-com musical takes the cast and audience on a journey from the shady depths of the city to a higher plane in the Salvation Army Mission Hall as the notorious Sky Masterson (John Earwood) finds fate (and chemistry!) intervening when he takes out Sister Sarah Brown (Alison Vincent) for a bet.
The pair sang with aplomb and their rich vocals complemented each other very Nicely Nicely.
Other notable performances came from Nathan Detroit (Wayne Ings), who gave a new meaning to the word shifty, and Arvide Abernathy (Alan Pritchard) in his cameo as the wise and serene Mission Brother.
The cast were strong but there were some first night glitches (crashes from the wings, a crackling sound and faltering words) and the overall production lacked polish at times. It redeemed itself with the foxy Hot Box Girls, who exuded vainglorious confidence and some excellent dancing. All good fun.
