1:35pm Wednesday 25th January 2012 in Curtain Call By Anne Waggott
IN an observational comedy about human behaviour diametrically opposed couples find themselves next door to each other on a caravan site, but have more in common than they initially suspect...
Middle-class Ron (Steve Harris), early-retired schoolteacher, who’s constantly undermined by his refined, cultured, repressed, wife Yvonne (her complexity brilliantly portrayed by Georgie Gulliford), is dismayed by the close proximity of their insatiably sexual neighbours.
Obnoxious, uncouth Grant (Ben O’Shaughnessey) seems to irritate everybody, but his young partner, spirited Steph (Kay Fraser) is the one who brings Yvonne’s raunchy side to the fore.
All four cast members gelled very well together, with good regional accents and wonderfully dynamic (if at times rather unsavoury) characters in this well-directed comedy of wry, gritty Northern humour. Good ad-libbing covered a few minor technical hitches and much of the comedy came from perfectly timed expressive looks, mannerisms, visual gags and use of two fullsize caravans. Good fun!
