1:04pm Thursday 26th January 2012 in Curtain Call By Ham Quentin
WITH its witty dialogue, romantic coming-of-age comedy and, of course, the alluring figure of Mrs Robinson, Charles Webb’s story never fails to please, and Terry Johnson’s stage version is a skilful adaptation, very warmly received by the audience of this production, so much so that they applauded almost every scene.
Nevertheless, behind the amusing situations there is a powerful attack on the emptiness of suburban life, and especially marriage.
Sarah-Jayne Wareham is glamorous as Mrs Robinson. It’s clear her character’s frustration is not just sexual.
As the title character, Matt Bulner is so handsome and charismatic that he must work hard to convince us he is uncertain about anything. Still, he is sympathetic when stomping about in his skin-diving gear, or trying to have a conversation with his bored mistress.
Miriam Roe is a poignant Elaine, and her accent holds up better than most.
