2:41pm Monday 20th February 2012 in Curtain Call By Karen Robson
FIRMLY entrenched in a more innocent age, Summer Holiday with its story of four lads and a Double Decker bus escaping dismal rainy London for a trip to Europe provided a perfect antidote to current gloom.
Enlivened by well conceived scenes and some great musical numbers, the production was episodic and the overall pace a sedate drive due to complicated set changes. The set itself was a triumph of design and ingenuity. And the musical interludes were sublime.
Harry Edelsten was a charismatic lead, with a touch of young Elvis, making Don somewhat more hip than wholesome.
Eloise Flood made the runaway Barbara suitably sassy and bright. Vicki Lampard (Connie), Ellie Dewar (Angie) and Katie Hounsham (Alma) charmed as the musical trio who joined the trip. While Tim Honey (Steve), Andrew Breakwell (Cyril) and Chris James (Edwin) all impressed as Don’s three friends.
