REVIEW: Jack and the Beanstalk, NOMADS, Woodley Village Hall, Romsey

DREAMER Jack sells his cow Buttermilk for a handful of beans which, once planted, grow into a beanstalk taking him up to the kingdom of the giant, Buster Gut-Bucket.

Naomi Andrews (Jack) made a valiant and charming principal boy, with good comic support from Luke Wassell as Jack’s brother, Simple Simon. Director Brian Rowe’s Dame Dotty Dimple had a great rapport with the local audience (particularly with quick-witted ad-libbing to cover technical hiccups), and Rachel Chadwick’s wicked Piccalilli had a great cackle and personality that demanded the boos her character received!

Charlotte Meader sang beautifully as Jack’s love interest, Princess Primrose, while Emma Claridge should be commended for her regal performance as replacement King. Martin Drake and Chris Read made amusing ‘henchmen’ as Snatchet and Scarper with their physical japes and quick-fire dialogue.
