3:10pm Wednesday 22nd February 2012 in Curtain Call By Ham Quentin
A SHORT playwriting competition with the winners providing links to Shakespeare: SARAH REILLY: Betrothed daughter (Lucie Metcalf) defies zesty mother (Ros Liddiard). Last line the best.
SARAH HAWKINS: Young Yorick’s (Tom Hayes) situation parallels Hamlet’s. Amusing “Showbiz” story ends prematurely.
MADELEINE WOOSNAM: Georgia Gomersall terrorises Amelia Wrigley and Chloe Earley with Ouija and Emily Gaul. Neatly constructed but surprises lacking.
PETER PHILLIPS: The Bard (Mike Heseldin) succumbs to trivialisation by media (mainly Tim Robbins).
MARGARET HISTED: Amusing characters (Matt Channing and Graham Cranmer especially) and enjoyable language feature here.
NOEL THORPE-TRACEY: Shakespeare’s words predominate, showing influence on Maria Head’s mind.
GRAHAM CRANMER: Steve Clark and Alec Walters form truce on the battlefield. Cleverly reimagined but loses energy.
SIAN WOODRUFF: Modern Richard III type (David Baldwin) doesn’t kill so fails to chill.
DAVID DUNN: Gary Nicholson does well providing phone therapy to familiar characters.
JONATHON EDGINGTON: Matt Avery’s performance is the highlight here.
