REVIEW: The Reading Group and The Worst Day of My Life, Lee Players, Crofton Hall Theatre, Stubbington
TWO plays with one theme – infidelity. Faye Weldon’s The Reading Group failed to draw much more than the occasional chuckle from a capacity audience. Angela Torroni gave by far the most assured performance as hostess Oriole, with deadpan humour delivered by Angela Campion as Lesley.
The friction between Avril (feisty Lara Evans) and Anne (Tammy Burns) exploded when Harry (a confident Mark Burns) was exposed as having a romantic interest in both women.
June Witham’s production lacked pace at times.
Tony Richardson’s The Worst Day of My Life chronicles an uncomfortable hospital visiting-time for ‘trigamist’ Charlie Brown (Steve Hudson).
With one wife at his bedside, and more to come, this comedy was played at just the right pace, with many clever lines delivered by director Vicky Melville’s well-cast actors.
Best performances came from Julie Jarvis (posh-wife Evelyn) and Lesley Liggett (boudoir-wife Melissa) who enliven proceedings when three wives collide.
